Future stars of Valaisan football

FC St-Maurice had proposed the idea of organising a competition – aimed at identifying the most talented under-13 players – to all of the clubs in the canton of Valais. “This trophy is a fantastic idea. We’re delighted to support it, all the more so because it’s going to be an annual event. It is vital that we boost the development of young players,” said Sepp Blatter.

Former Swiss internationals Christophe Bonvin and Blaise Piffaretti devised the following qualifying exercises:

• Shots at goal: three left-footed shots and three right-footed shots with a moving ball
• Playing precise long passes on the move
• Free kicks: three left-footed shots and three right-footed shots with a dead ball
• Keepy-uppy and ball control

Eight players were selected on the basis of these exercises, which were lauded for their innovative, playful approach. Following a four-a-side match between the selected players, Borja Valades, who plays at “Junior D” level for FC Monthey, was named the winner by the panel of judges, consisting of the two above-mentioned stars and their fellow former Swiss international Yvan Quentin. Berkan Kutlu (FC Monthey) finished runner-up, and Bartélémy Reuse (FC Orsières) took third place. The winner was presented with his trophy by Gelson Fernandes, who grew up in Sion and is currently on the books of Manchester City.
